SummaryFitness-for-purpose in the assessment of work related degree courses
The aim of this research is to review the assessment of work related courses such as the EdD in order to evaluate their fitness-for-purpose. The first stage is to review existing assessment requirements and then to consider possible alternatives. This project will explore the fit between the purposes and intentions of the Institute’s work-based courses and the forms of assessment that are part of their certification. The central concern is the extent to which these assessments are fit-for-purpose and whether they encourage the skills and understanding that the courses set out to develop. Where appropriate alternative approaches may be developed and trialed. The first stage is to review the schemes of assessment on the Institute’s key work-based learning programmes, with the initial focus on the EdD. There will also be a review of other UK and international EdD courses to assess the range of assessment schemes. This will be followed by interviews and survey of students, staff and other stakeholders to explore views on alternative approaches (eg portfolios, publications, professional presentations etc). This will link with Eileen Carnell’s project with EdD students. Outcomes The outcomes of this project will be a series of reports on current and possible alternative approaches to assessment of these courses. This will be the basis for negotiation of trials of some of these alternative approaches. The intention and contribution of this project will be to develop schemes of assessment which offer valid assessment of the work-based and professional skills that the courses are seeking to develop.
