Call for Papers – Education in Custodial Institutions

Educação, Sociedade & Culturas (Education, Society & Cultures) is an academic journal aimed at contributing to the development of the Educational Sciences. You can find more information at www.fpce.up.pt/ciie/revistaesc.   This call for papers is for a special issue (30) on Education in Custodial Institutions. Tiago Neves and Luís Fernandes, both Professors at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto, are the invited editors for this special issue.   This special issue aims at identifying and contributing to a deeper understanding of the current situation of educational phenomena and processes in custodial institutions (prisons, therapeutic communities, detention centres for delinquent youths, orphanages, etc.).   The term “education” is understood in a broad sense, not reduced to formal and/or school education. The focus is on the organizing principles of custodial institutions, and on how their educational practices are articulated with those principles.   Papers in English and French are accepted.     SUGGESTED TOPICS   - School in prisons - The re-educative work in Educative Centres - The academic performance of institutionalized children - The link between education and rehabilitation - The concept of total institution     CALENDAR   - Deadline for submission of proposals: November 2, 2009 - Referee’s feedback: December 21, 2009 - Notification of acceptance: January 29, 2010   SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS   The papers to be submitted should be approximately 8.000 words long. All papers will be presented to the Editorial Board of the journal and submitted to a double-blind peer review process.
