Summary

This is an innovative approach to teacher observation using an up-to-date digital camcorder and peer and tutor review that is based on a set of guidelines to critique real-life teaching. It relates to two aspects of teacher training namely: learning to be a teacher (‘the how') and performing as a teacher (‘the when'). The methodologies that are employed include questionnaires, for quantitative data capture and perception capture of the use of camcorder recording of teaching and peer and tutor review as an analytical tool to relate theory and practice. This one-year project involves two PGCE (post compulsory) groups of in-service trainee teachers who are working and learning as teachers; one acting as a control group and the other taking part in the project. The results of this research will be to gain a greater understanding of the effectiveness of this type of innovative lesson observation, to disseminate to colleagues, to apply this to related programmes, and to publish the findings in a refereed journal.
